Artist
Kitchen Orchestra with Alexander von Schlippenbach
Over the years, Stavanger has brought forth some of Norway’s most noteworthy improvisers, a development reflected in the inception of the Kitchen Orchestra in 2005. Through making use of external composers and band leaders, the band seek to add various flavours to different projects, to write new music and to push their own envelope. MaiJazz sees them led Alexander von Schlippenbach, one of Europe’s preeminent free jazz bandleaders. In addition to his career as a composer and pianist, Schlippenbach founded The Globe Unity Orchestra in 1966, and was involved in the genesis of the Berlin Contemporary Jazz Orchestra in the 80s. He has performed together with Evan Parker, Paul Lovens, Tony Oxley, Sam Rivers, Kenny Wheeler, Aki Takase and Misha Mengelberg, to name but a few.
