Ojos de Brujo
An entire Spanish armada of musical wizardry and witchery sails into town in the form of collective Ojos de Brujo. Although this coven are not here to frighten and invade, but rather to demonstrate the exciting coalescence of ideas that can take place between different cultures.
In musical terms, their sound is a fiery fusion of flamenco (well, they’re Spanish, aren’t they?), pop, hip-hop, world-music and much, much more. Flamenco is the foundation, but the analogy stops there: the multicultural, Barcelona-based band is big enough and broad enough to accommodate exciting musical mixes and often invite guest artists to record on their albums. Nithin Sawhney, who performed at MaiJazz last year, is just one of these.
Fronted by powerful female vocalist Marina “La Canillas”, they also communicate strong opinions and do not flinch at addressing important social and cultural issues in their songs. In combination with a modern and varied soundscape, we’re talking about a whole lot more than just rattling some sabres...
